Japanese Scarf Joint

Learn to layout, cut and connect a traditional Japanese scarf joint.

Over two days, participants will learn to lay out, hand cut, and assemble a traditional Kanawa Tsugi scarf joint using only hand tools and traditional methods. Students may attend individually or as a pair, with each participant working on their own 200 x 200 timber beam to complete one half of the mirrored joint connection. Throughout the course, attention is given to accurate layout, careful tool work, and the subtle refinements required to achieve a precise fit. Once complete, participants will bring the two halves together with their work partner to test the quality and accuracy of the connection, a rewarding moment that reveals the elegance and ingenuity of this historic joint. Completed beams may be purchased to take home, or left with Heartwood for future teaching and demonstration purposes.

Tool and carpentry experience is recommended but not compulsory, the course is open to participants aged 16 and over. Each day runs from 6:45am to 4:00pm. Morning tea and lunch are not provided, though a self-serve tea and coffee station will be available throughout the day. Onsite camping is included in the course price for those wishing to stay on the property and fully immerse themselves in the experience.

A pioneer in making traditional timber framing accessible to everyday people here in Australia, it was an absolute pleasure meeting and learning from Josh, and i look forward to seeing the great things him and Brodie create in the timber framing world.
