Japanese Scarf Joint - 2 Day - 2nd & 3rd October 2026.
Over two days, participants will learn to lay out, hand cut, and assemble a traditional Kanawa Tsugi scarf joint using only hand tools and traditional methods. Students may attend individually or as a pair, with each participant working on their own 200 x 200 timber beam to complete one half of the mirrored joint connection. Throughout the course, attention is given to accurate layout, careful tool work, and the subtle refinements required to achieve a precise fit. Once complete, participants will bring the two halves together with their work partner to test the quality and accuracy of the connection — a rewarding moment that reveals the elegance and ingenuity of this historic joint. Completed beams may be purchased to take home, or left with Heartwood for future teaching and demonstration purposes.
What you’ll get:
Hands-on instruction in traditional timber framing techniques
Hand-tool-only layout, cutting, and joinery techniques
